Reception Priorities

Communication and Language

Developing children’s communication and language skills is essential for their learning and social development. At All Angels Federation, we create a language-rich environment where children are encouraged to express themselves through conversations, storytelling, and role-play. Our dedicated teaching team models effective communication, introduces new vocabulary, and engages children in discussions that enhance their language use. By integrating these practices into our curriculum, we help children become confident communicators ready to build on their learning.

Phonics

We teach phonics using the Read Write Inc (RWI) scheme, a structured and systematic approach that builds children’s reading and writing skills from the ground up. Through engaging, daily lessons, children learn to recognise and blend sounds, enabling them to decode words confidently and accurately. This foundation in phonics is crucial as it underpins literacy development, ensuring children can read fluently and comprehend texts moving forwards.

Maths

At All Angels Federation, we use the White Rose Hub maths scheme to develop strong foundational numeracy skills in our Reception children. This scheme introduces mathematical concepts through practical, playful activities that encourage problem-solving and reasoning. By using engaging, hands-on experiences, children build a deep understanding of numbers, shapes, and patterns. This approach ensures that children not only learn essential maths skills but also develop a positive attitude towards mathematics, laying the groundwork for future academic success.

Reception Curriculum and Provision

At Clover Hill, we know that all children learn differently and at their own pace. Our curriculum enables all children to make exceptional progress within a happy and safe learning environment.

We use a balance of adult led activities and child-initiated play within an environment which is designed to support their language, knowledge, and skills. Adult led includes whole class input, small group work, 1.1 learning tasks and intentional interactions during child-initiated learning.

We use the Early Years Foundation Stage statutory framework (2024) which identifies the Early Learning Goals (ELGs) that children should meet by the end of Reception. We follow our own curriculum map (link here) which depicts our expectations for each age group within the Early Years.

During ‘choosing time’/Free Flow, we allow children to choose their own learning both indoors and outdoors. We believe this fosters independence, resilience, and a love for learning, while also honing essential skills such as decision-making, communication, and collaboration.

Indoors, our classrooms are carefully curated to offer a stimulating and inviting space where children can engage in self-directed exploration and learning.
Outdoors, our natural play areas provide an extension of the learning environment, offering endless opportunities for discovery, experimentation, and physical activity.

Long Term Plan

Tapestry Learning Journeys

Tapestry is an easy-to-use, online learning journal that helps staff and parents to record, track and celebrate a child’s progress.

Text, images and videos are uploaded through the week for children to look at, recall and share with others. We encourage parents to upload special memories for the children to share in school.

In Reception, children log in to their own Tapestry learning journal on iPad’s. This helps them to recall previous learning experiences and talk about their learning with others.

We also use Tapestry to deliver important information to Parents/Carers through ‘memos’. Therefore, it is important for Parents/Carers to log into Tapestry regularly.

Once you have provided your email details, you will be sent a link to access your child’s Tapestry learning journey.
