What is a wider curriculum?

At Clover Hill Infant and Nursery School, our wider curriculum aims to enrich children’s experiences and broaden their horizons by teaching vital knowledge and cultural capital experiences. We promote core values that help children learn how to live well and fully, ensuring they are equipped with key virtues such as respect, perseverance, trust, hope, and success. These values are embedded in daily school life through classroom activities, assemblies, and collective worship, helping children understand and demonstrate them in everyday situations. As a Church of England school, we celebrate our Christian heritage while also exploring and appreciating other faiths, fostering a spirit of inclusion and respect for diversity.

Our extra-curriculum

Our curriculum extends beyond the classroom with a broad range of extra-curricular activities, providing opportunities for children to explore new interests or develop existing ones. These activities include sporting, artistic, outdoor, and academic options that nurture the whole child. Through partnerships with local organisations, we have deliberately and carefully planned events, trips, and visits that expand their world, from local explorations to memorable experiences.

Additionally, our extra-curricular programme introduces children to activities they might not otherwise try, giving them the chance to step outside their comfort zones and develop new skills. We also participate in the local schools’ sports partnership, allowing our children to engage in friendly inter-school competitions and sporting events, promoting teamwork, perseverance, and resilience.

Children can make a difference

At Clover Hill Infant and Nursery School, we encourage children to think about their future contributions to society and the importance of personal responsibility. Children are encouraged to take on meaningful roles within the school, which helps them build responsibility and leadership skills from an early age. Through initiatives like our School Council, Eco Team, Community Heroes, and Kind Crew, children learn that small actions can make a big difference in their school and the wider world. Our Eco Team promotes ecological awareness, teaching children that caring for the environment starts with everyday choices. Meanwhile, our Kind Crew and Community Heroes inspire acts of kindness and service to others, fostering a strong sense of giving back.

Children learn to keep themselves safe

Ensuring children’s safety is a top priority at Clover Hill. We provide a comprehensive programme to teach children how to keep safe in different situations, working with external organisations like the police, fire service, and e-safety experts. This safety education is tailored to the needs of our community, helping children feel secure and aware of potential risks.

Children’s well-being

Mental health and well-being are also integral to our curriculum. Through our whole-school well-being programme, children are taught to understand their emotions, develop a sense of identity, and find their place in the world. Our strong pastoral team offers additional support for those who need it, ensuring that every child has access to the care and guidance necessary for emotional and mental well-being.

By offering a rich curriculum filled with diverse experiences and activities, Clover Hill Infant and Nursery School ensures that children leave with not only a strong academic foundation but also the life skills, values, and cultural capital needed to thrive in the world around them.
